Is fall a good time to plant?

This is a great question. For the most part, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” Trees, shrubs, and perennials do very well when planted in the fall.

Why is fall such a good time to plant?

It’s all about the roots. Fall is the primary time when plants invest their energy in growing roots. By planting in the fall, you give your plants the opportunity to send roots out into the native soil. This serves as a protection during the upcoming winter and the following summer. Overall, plants that have been planted in fall require less water to establish than those that have been planted in the spring or summer.

What shouldn’t be planted in fall?

Many gardeners like to “push the envelope” with regard to what they plant. Although central Iowa is in the 5A hardiness zone, many people try to grow plants rated for zones 5B, 6A, and above. Given the right microclimate, this gamble sometimes does pay off. If you’re among those who like to “play the odds”, spring may be a better time to plant than fall. This way you’ll give your less hardy plants a head start on winter.

However, if you’re not the type to gamble with your plants, then by all means come to Miller Nursery this fall. We only sell plants that are proven to be hardy in central Iowa. So don’t wait for spring! Come by the nursery and take advantage of our great deals on plants.
